Why choose dental implants?

  • Secure dental implants are held in place by your jawbone, so they won’t slip or move when you eat and speak.
  • Highly aesthetic dental implants look and feel just like natural teeth, boosting your confidence in your smile.
  • Replace one or more missing teeth in any part of your mouth with this safe and well-established restorative solution.
  • Support and protect your facial structure, jawbone, any remaining natural teeth, and your oral health.

What are dental implants?

If you are missing one, several, or even all of your upper or lower teeth, dental implants are an aesthetic, permanent, and highly effective way to rebuild your smile. They are an innovative dental restoration, able to significantly improve your quality of life and your self-esteem.

Dental implants are small and strong titanium posts which are inserted into your jawbone to mimic a natural tooth root. Titanium is well-tolerated by the body, enabling the implant to fuse to the surrounding bone and create a solid and secure foundation. A bespoke porcelain crown is then fitted on top of the implant to complete your new tooth. Dental implants are a safe solution for missing teeth, able to last a lifetime with the proper care.

What does dental implant treatment involve?

Consultation
We begin your dental implant treatment at The Dental and Implant Clinic Southbourne with a detailed consultation. You meet our prosthodontist and have the chance to ask any questions about implant treatment. We check you are suitable for dental implants, and may take a digital x-ray to aid diagnosis. If you need any preparatory treatment, such as a bone graft or extraction, we inform you of this.

Planning
We take digital impressions and scans using advanced dental equipment. These are used to help us plan the optimum position for your dental implant. If you are having a single implant, this is a direct replacement, using the hole left by your missing tooth. Multiple dental implants are placed in strategic positions to provide the best support.

Fitting
Your dental implant is placed into your jawbone by our specialist prosthodontist during a short surgical appointment in our practice. We use local anaesthetic to minimise any discomfort, so you shouldn’t feel a thing. The implant needs several months to heal and fuse with your jawbone, so we fit a temporary restoration to protect your gum.

Smile!
When your dental implant has fully healed, we create your final replacement tooth to your exact specifications. We remove the temporary restoration and fit your new tooth to your implant to reveal your new smile!

Frequently asked questions

How do dental implants work?

Dental implants are used to replace the roots of your natural teeth, providing strong and long-lasting support for a custom-made crown or bridge fitted on top. A natural tooth consists of the crown, which is seen in the mouth, and the root, which is under the gum and holds the tooth in place. Dental implants are designed to replicate this, with great success.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants have a number of benefits when used to replace teeth. They are a well-established, safe, and very effective way to replace one, several, or all your teeth, and significantly improve your quality of life. Unlike loose and uncomfortable dentures, implants stay firmly in place. You can eat and speak in public with confidence, safe in the knowledge that your teeth will not move. Implants can also give you a stunning complete smile to be proud of.

How much do dental implants cost?

The cost of dental implants varies depending on your individual case and how many implants you need. At our dental practice near Havant and Chichester, dental implants start from £2300. You will be given a more exact quote after your initial consultation.

Why do I need to replace a missing tooth?

The loss of one or more teeth can have a considerable impact on your everyday life and your dental health. A missing tooth causes your jawbone to shrink, prompting your existing natural teeth to move out of place and your facial shape to begin to sag. This can lead to premature ageing of the skin on your face, particularly if you have several missing teeth. A dental implant can prevent this.

How long does dental implant treatment take?

Dental implant surgery itself is a relatively short procedure. For straightforward cases, implant placement can take as little as 15 minutes. Your implant then needs time to heal and integrate with your jawbone, which can take around 3-6 months. We can place temporary teeth during this time. We can give you a more accurate estimate for your treatment time after your initial consultation.

How long do dental implants last?

Dental implants have the potential to last a lifetime if they are looked after properly. Over 95% of implants are successful when fitted in healthy gums, and with good levels of oral health and regular long-term care, they can last for many years without issue.

Is dental implant treatment painful?

We use local anaesthetic during implant treatment, so you will not feel any pain during the procedure. You may experience some swelling or discomfort for a week or two afterwards, but this can be managed with over-the-counter painkillers. Dental implant treatment is generally considered easier than having a tooth removed.

Am I suitable for dental implants?

Most people are suitable for dental implants, providing they are in good general and oral health. We take into account the following factors when considering if dental implants are right for you:

  • Gum density and dental health – healthy gums and jawbone are the main factors taken into consideration. If you have insufficient bone volume, we have the option of a bone graft or sinus lift to help rebuild missing bone, but this does add to your total treatment time.
  • Overall general health – this is important if you are considering dental implants. The better your general health, the better your chances of a quick recovery. If you have diabetes or are a heavy smoker, you have a greater risk of developing gum disease or infections following implant surgery and therefore may not be considered suitable.
  • Oral hygiene – your overall oral hygiene will be taken into account. It is also important to maintain a good oral hygiene routine after your implant surgery.
What are the risks and complications associated with dental implants?

Dental implants are considered a safe dental restoration. Minor risks and complications include bleeding and swelling, which are easily treated. Other risks, such as nerve damage or allergic reactions, are rare. It is important to care for your implants. If you don’t clean your implants properly, they will develop a coat of residue, like plaque forms on natural teeth. This can lead to gum infection, bleeding, soreness and discomfort.
